The network of Travelling Folk High School throughout the world also offer volunteer opportunities in many other countries in Africa, South America and Asia.

AFRICA IS ON THE MOVE

The world is becoming one world. With the modern means of communication and transport it is possible to know about and take part in events going on all over the world. We travel and meet other people, realising that we have more in common with each other than we have differences. We share a common future and we have to work together to shape that future.

Africa is on the move. For many centuries Africa has been considered the "dark" sleeping continent. But recently Africa has begun a rapid development, a reborn continent is on the move. Over Africa as a whole, the last four years have seen a positive growth in the economy. The GDP per capita has increased 2-4% per year over the last four years. This growing economy is a possible foundation for development, but it does not guarantee a better standard of living for everyone.

There is still much work to be done. Life expectancy in Africa is the lowest in the world - HIV/AIDS is fast becoming the single largest killer of adults; over half of the population lives under the poverty line, and 58% of people have no access to safe drinking water. There is only one doctor per 18,000 inhabitants and infant mortality is the highest in the world.
It is a big challenge, but Africa is full of tasks that need to be done. As a Development Instructor you will find yourself in the forefront of this development, working together with the people in Africa. Together we can make a difference!
