What is DNS?
DNS is an international teacher training college with the aim of educating teachers who want to contribute to the education of children and youngsters in the world. In Danish the name of the college is “Det Nødvendige Seminarium” meaning “The Necessary Teacher Training College” – Necessary because we who run the college find it very necessary to educate good teachers with a huge amount of various experiences, life skills and knowledge to participate in bringing up the new generations all over the world. The college was founded in 1972. To date students from more that 18 different countries in the world have graduated from DNS.

What is the DNS-Movement?
In 1993 our college sent two teachers and 6 students to Mozambique to help start up a DNS teacher training college in Maputo together with the development organisation Humana People to People. Peace had come to Mozambique after the many years of civil war and instability, and there was a great need for educating children - especially in the rural areas where schools were scarce and teachers few. So the aim of the DNS teacher training college in Mozambique was, and is, to educate primary teachers for the rural areas in Mozambique. This gave good results and soon the Ministry of Education in Mozambique made an agreement with Humana People to People to, over the coming years, start a DNS college in each of the provinces in Mozambique - equalling a total of 16 colleges. This year, 2003, 7 DNS-colleges are up and running in Mozambique, 6 in Angola and from July 15 2003, one in Malawi as well. So all the DNS-colleges in Denmark, Mozambique, Angola and Malawi now together form the DNS-movement. We hope the movement will be extended to more countries during the coming years.

Teach children and youth with special needs
DNS Denmark works together with a range of schools in Denmark, who have specialised in educating children and youngsters with special needs. The hallmark of these schools is inclusive education, as pupils from all sorts of backgrounds, and possessing various theoretical and social skills, work and study together in positive environments. The DNS students can do their teaching practices of the 2nd and 3rd years in these schools. This provides an excellent opportunity to do some good for the children and youngsters in our part of the world who need special attention and care due to unhappy circumstances, and is regarded as a foundation for the DNS student’s education.
