NAMPULA PROVINCE, MOZAMBIQUE
During investigation periods, some of our volunteers visited Nampula - the main city in the province, and also Ilha de Moçambique (Mozambique Island). The island contained one of the earliest Portuguese settlements in the country. Many ships would stop along the coast on their way to trade in Asia. The main fort on the island dates back to the 16th century.

Long distance travel in Mozambique is by bus. If you get on early enough you can get a seat, and share space with women, children, and chickens. At every stop locals come to the windows to sell drinks, corn, fruit, & biscuits. |

Old cinema. Many buildings such as this were left abondoned when the Portuguese left in 1975. Most are now used as homes. |
There are roughly 3,000 people living on the island.
